Scrapping a vehicle is simpler than most people think — but having the right paperwork ready makes it fast and smooth. Here's the complete checklist of documents you'll typically need to scrap your car, bike or commercial vehicle at a registered RVSF, and what the certificates you receive actually mean.
Documents checklist
Requirements can vary slightly by state and vehicle type, but you should keep the following ready:
- Original Registration Certificate (RC) of the vehicle.
- Valid photo ID of the owner — Aadhaar card, PAN card, driving licence, passport or voter ID.
- Address proof of the owner (if different from the ID).
- Passport-size photograph of the owner.
- PAN card (recommended, especially for higher-value or commercial vehicles).
- Cancelled cheque / bank details — so the scrap value can be paid to you.
- NOC — if there was ever a loan on the vehicle, a No Objection Certificate from the financier; and an NOC from the RTO if required in your state.
- GST details — for companies or commercial fleet owners.
What if the vehicle isn't running or has missing parts?
That's completely normal for end-of-life vehicles. A non-running vehicle, a rusted body, or missing parts does not stop you from scrapping it. We can also assist with pickup where needed.
The two certificates you'll receive
1. Certificate of Deposit (CoD)
Issued when your vehicle is deposited at the RVSF. It is your official proof that the vehicle has entered the authorized scrapping process. The CoD is transferable and is what you use to claim benefits like road-tax rebate on a new vehicle.
2. Certificate of Vehicle Scrapping
Issued once the vehicle is actually scrapped. This is the document you use for RC cancellation at the RTO, closing the vehicle's record permanently in your name.
